America’s High SchoolsA large number of Chinese high school students now flock to the US for getting their high school diploma. High schools in the US are preferred to Chinese schools because of their liberal policies in education and the opportunity to get into America’s prestigious universities. Immigrants in the age group between 15-19 years from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan now come to the US to receive their high school diploma. This has reduced the overall age of the average Chinese immigrant.

The reason behind this trend is attributed to the rigorous high school system back in China, which allows no scope for failure and recreation. Also a growing class of economically strong Chinese parents who can afford the costs of US high school education is another reason. The number of Chinese students in high schools is so high, that several schools have taken steps to tailor the classes so as to ease the cultural transition for the immigrant Chinese teens.

Many of these immigrants are forced to attend private schools, as immigrants are not allowed to attend public schools for more than a year. These “helicopter children”, as they are called live with host families and California and its suburbs remain the preferred choice for these immigrants.
